Stitchin' in the Wilds of Alaska
Posted by Julie or Chris Jackson on
Meet Subversive Stitcher Kendra! She works as the fish ticket clerk at a salmon processing plant on Bristol Bay. She arrives in early May and works until about August 1. They process sockeye salmon, mostly for the domestic market and by mid-July she’d helped process just over 5 million pounds; last year they did about 8 million, a record year bay-wide. Kendra says, “It is a crazy business, but I’m (mostly) glad to be part of this still thriving wild fishery!” Here are some photos of what it's like stitching out in the wilds of Alaska: My cabin—a 20’ container...
Meet Guest Contributor Edwin Z. Canary!

Edwin is a longtime Subversive Cross Stitcher who has constantly amazed me with his work--especially his super miniature versions of both his own and our designs on 25-count Lugano fabric! Like the Miniature Middle Finger kit shown above (Chapstick not included, ha). Scattered throughout the intro below you'll see photos of some of Edwin's other work (see all of his current patterns on our site by clicking here!) PLUS he lives in New Zealand!! AND he's a poet! And a really nice guy with superb wit. So, here's his introduction!: ----------- Kia ora! I’m Edwin Z. Canary (he/they), A.K.A. @zeekidvicious – I...
The Stitch, Plz Journal from Fred!
Posted by Julie or Chris Jackson on
Now taking pre-orders for the new STITCH, PLZ journal kit from Fred! This fantastic journal has been a dream of mine for years and the team at Fred exceeded my wildest imagination. Other journals are difficult to use at best--this one is made with the stitcher in mind because the holes are just the right size and spaced well. The cover is black(!), just pliable enough to stitch comfortably and--BONUS-- he first sheet behind it is also black to really showcase your design. The quality is just *chef's kiss* perfection and I KNOW you'll love it. It truly is a dream...
How to add fringe to your piñata!
Posted by Julie or Chris Jackson on
How do you add fringe to your piñata? Very carefully. It might kick! These instructions are for the pattern for Fiesta Like There’s No Mañana. I decided to dress my piñata up with some fringe. Note: I made the same color fringe on top of my stitches, but you could also try using different colors (like pink fringe over yellow, blue over pink, etc.) If you do, send me photos! First, I used two strands of floss and made little loops like this: Next, I secured the loops with a backstitch on each square of the top row of that color. On the...
Meet Guest Contributor Melanie Ceraso of Souldanse!
Posted by Julie or Chris Jackson on
I'm so happy to introduce you to Melanie Ceraso, she has been a part of the Subversive Cross Stitch family for years--generously donating her time to help me in early iterations of the website. I was overwhelmed and underfunded and I couldn't have done it without her! So I was really glad she agreed to be a contributor. Her version of "Not My Circus" has something a little extra re: clowns that made me LOL! Here's Melanie to introduce herself: Souldanse: About Melanie Hey! I’m Melanie (she/her), the artist behind Souldanse. I remember my Mom teaching me cross-stitch back when...
