We’ve Got Class(es)!

I REALLY hope you’re near Dallas, because we’re getting our CLASS act together! Derp!

Seriously, though, our gal Nikki will be teaching a couple of classes at the very cool Pipe & Palette in the downtown Plano Arts District. Plus, we’ll have wine and some cake balls from Amazeballz (which is right down the street in case you need more after class).

The first class will be on Saturday, March 16th from 2:00-4:00, so sign up and get ready for some fun! You’ll get a Deluxe Kit, some tiny scissor snips, some cool swag we’re having made just for class attendees, and an official membership card to Subversive Stitch Club! We’re calling it that and then we’re expanding on that idea — there will be more phases, including an online community for members only. SO stay tuned!

p.s. Pipe & Palette also offers private classes in case you want to arrange your own event with Nikki to have a class with just your besties.

Margaret Atwood on Twitter

Subversive stitcher Pauline Winick presented this modified version of our Fuck Aunt Lydia design to THE Margaret Atwood at an event! Pauline was disappointed she didn’t get a photo of Ms. Atwood with the piece, but she left without opening it. I was looking around Twitter the other day (I’m terrible at keeping up with it) and saw that Ms. Atwood herself had posted this! WOW!! If you haven’t seen Ann Dowd’s portrayal of Aunt Lydia on Hulu’s brilliant adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, she’s deliciously despicable.

Inbox: From Melissa

I’m sharing this touching email from you, with Melissa’s permission, because it stopped me in my tracks. xoxo

My name is Melissa and I live in Utah. I am 41 years old with an overabundance of serious chronic health problems.

I am going into hospice in about a month. My friends wanted some pictures of me before I entered hospice. I asked for “prop” ideas of what they will remember of me. Several friends said cross stitching…. So the attached is what I chose to use.

I thought you’d like to know that your cross stitch patterns etc are my favorite ones.

Thank you for bringing a smile to my face as I make my cross stitch gifts.

Free PDFs from HotelTonight

Last year, HotelTonight ran an ad campaign with several cross stitch pieces in hoops that everyone loved! I couldn’t believe these pieces were created by a very talented graphic artist in San Francisco, I’ve never seen anyone do this so well – and I’ve sure seen a lot of people try.

This year, HotelTonight asked me to create PDF patterns from three of their favorite ads from the campaign–it was pretty fun to do something completely in reverse from how I usually do it. I’m hosting these three patterns on my site on behalf of HotelTonight and they’re all FREE! Pretty cool, huh?

Consider these a little hint that your holiday guests (or you!) might be more comfortable in a hotel this season. HotelTonight’s app makes booking a room fun–not complicated!

This project is in partnership with HotelTonight.

#GivingTuesday – Giving Big!

It’s #GivingTuesday and we’re giving an unprecedented 50% of our profits of all sales between now and 9:00 pm CST to Feeding America.

I’m cutting it off before midnight because I want to get our donation in early to make sure it’s MATCHED! I chose this charity because it’s close to my heart and gets excellent ratings on Charity Navigator – every dollar really makes a difference. With matching, every dollar equals TWENTY meals! Here’s some more info:

Feeding America is the nationwide network of 200 food banks that leads the fight against hunger in the United States. Together, we provide food to more than 46 million people through 60,000 food pantries and meal programs in communities across America. Feeding America also supports programs that improve food security among the people we serve; educates the public about the problem of hunger; and advocates for legislation that protects people from going hungry. Individuals, charities, businesses and government all have a role in ending hunger. Donate. Volunteer. Advocate. Educate. Together we can solve hunger.

You can also give directly through their site today to have your own donation matched dollar for dollar.

Thank you for helping us making a difference!

Black Friday and…CAROL!

“Im VERY OFFENDED by you and other business people that think it’s acceptable and evidently humorous/funny to sell/list items that include absurdities (namely the F-bomb)! There’s absolutely no reason for your bad taste and ignorance by agreeing to sell this garbage!
It’s too bad you can’t find something more tasteful than the trash you are including in your current inventory. You’ll never succeed including this trash in your inventory!
And we wonder why are country is in such a mess!
Carol C”

I don’t get much hate mail, but when I do it’s pretty awesome. Like this one from CAROL.

I think everyone has a Carol in their lives and what can you do but say BLESS YOUR HEART and have a little giggle at Carol’s use of the word “absurdities” (I think she means “obscenities”) and the hilarity of how I am what’s wrong with “are” country! (reminds me of my Bad Grammar series)

I posted this on Instagram and the response was HUGE, so I thought you might want to see it in case you missed it. Also, it’s the reason for the promo code this Black Friday weekend: FFSCAROL – use until midnight Sunday November 25, 2018 for 20% off everything on the KITS and HOLIDAYS pages. And don’t let the Carols get you down!

UPDATE: I made a new design (kit and PDF) for CAROL – a reminder not to let the Carols in your life bum you out!

New Sparkly Floss!

The new Mouliné Étoile floss from DMC takes away the frustration of metallic floss by combining cotton and metallic in one! The 6-strand divisible thread has a twinkly effect that adds a delicate sparkle to any design.

It’s impossible to capture the true sparkle of this floss, it’s so much more impressive in person. Dang it. DMC added fake sparkle effects to photos on their site, but I’m not going to do that here. Just zoom in on the photos and, trust me, objects on website appear MUCH twinklier in person! 😉

I experimented with several colors of this new line until I found my favorites and packaged them together for you. Check out the starter pack of 5 colors and crank up your holiday projects!

Classes! Pie Pop Tarts! Mimosas!

I’m VERY excited to announce Subversive Cross Stitch classes in Dallas at all three locations of one of our favorite shops, Emporium Pies!

The classes include Pie Pop Tarts (a very special thing not usually available), mimosas, a Shut Your Piehole deluxe kit and some extra Subversive goodies thrown in, like swag PLUS pretty blue embroidery scissors!

AND the classes will be taught by one of our besties who has been involved in Subversive Cross Stitch for years, giving us some of our best phrases–Nikki Lott Barringer! She’s one of my favorite writers and she’s really hilarious, you’ll love her! And the pie place, well, words can’t describe. I hope you’ll check it out if you’re in the Dallas area – sign up here. It’s only an hour and a half on a Saturday morning, just enough time to have fun without taking your whole Saturday. Hope we’ll see you there!

A Dose of Hopefulness

[this was originally a newsletter post–the response was so positive I’m sharing it here!]
Sad? Overwhelmed? Totally flummoxed?
I think there must be stages to dealing with this crazy world, like dealing with grief. I don’t know what they are, but hopefully you will get to the hopeful phase where you find what you can do to make the world a better place. Whether it’s marching, protesting or stitching for therapy, please remember to vote in the midterms this November. It’s more important now than ever. All is not lost.
Most importantly, don’t despair! Or, if you find yourself in despair, take a step back, reset with some stitching, then get back up again. This image brightened my day. Feel free to save, print, and put it up where you’ll see it every day.
And lastly, this:
Did you know you can get support via text if you’re feeling overwhelmed?
This organization seems like they do pretty good work: Crisis Text Line.
Just text HELLO to 741741.
You are never alone.

Mr. Stevers!

Introducing Mr. Stevers! I first noticed him stitching a bunch of my pieces and posting them on Instagram, so I hired him to stitch several of the new designs for my last book (and you can bet I’ll hire him again!) He’s been stitching for more years than he cares to admit and recently took to designing—which is when I just knew we had to get his designs out there to you!

Mr. Stevers has a remarkable mustache, is an avid flea marketer and collector who loves to tinker in the kitchen. His Instagram feed (@mrstevers) is proof of his impeccable tastes, I’m always so jealous of his collections! He’ll be contributing some PDF patterns to our site from time to time, starting with these three. You can always find his latest work on the PDF page, but also by searching for “Stevers“!
